What is Gold Filled?
A little more about the gold I use
Gold filled is a durable and more affordable way to enjoy the beauty of real gold, and is one of the materials I use in my beaded jewellery.
Gold filled jewellery is made by bonding a substantial layer of real gold to a base metal core using heat and pressure. The gold is bonded securely to the surface, making it much more durable than gold plated jewellery.
At Nellies London, I use gold filled alongside sterling silver to create pieces that are beautiful, wearable and made to last.
Will Gold Filled Tarnish?
Gold filled jewellery is designed to be durable and, with the right care, can be enjoyed for many years.
Unlike gold plating, where a very thin layer of gold is applied to the surface, gold filled has a much thicker layer of gold that is bonded to the base metal. This means it is less likely to wear away with everyday wear.
Like all jewellery, gold filled pieces will benefit from a little care. Perfume, lotions, chemicals, moisture and regular exposure to water can affect the appearance of your jewellery over time.
When you're not wearing your piece, I recommend storing it somewhere clean and dry, ideally in its jewellery box or pouch.
Gold Filled vs Gold Plated
The main difference is the amount of gold used and how it is bonded to the metal underneath.
Gold Filled
A substantial layer of real gold is bonded to a base metal core using heat and pressure. It is durable and designed for regular wear.
Gold Plated
A much thinner layer of gold is applied over another metal. Over time, the gold plating can wear away with regular use, revealing the metal underneath.
This is why I choose gold filled for my beaded jewellery. It gives you the beautiful warmth of gold while offering a more durable option for everyday wear.
A little care goes a long way
Your jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed. Taking a few simple steps to care for it will help keep it looking its best for longer.
I recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming or exercising, and avoiding direct contact with perfume, lotions and household chemicals. When you're not wearing it, store it somewhere clean and dry, ideally in its jewellery box or pouch.
